Wisdom From An Inmate

As I was looking for a Bible to read this morning, I came across a Bible that had been given to me by an inmate. Looking through the Bible I came across countless passages that had been highlighted, underlined, and many notes throughout. In the back of the Bible on the last blank page he had written,
1965-1970
"Locked up in solitary confinement
removed from interaction with another
human soul, a man has only the experience
of himself. He has been taken to his death...
a living death.

Wow... what a quote.

I hope things have looked up for him since he wrote this.

It is interesting how context can shape our understanding of a text. There are hundreds who pursue this kind of atmosphere, yet when it is forced upon someone, the reaction is quite different. I think both situations could lead someone to think about death. We "die to ourselves" willingly, yet the death he talks about is forced. Granted, he likely hd something to do with ending up incarcerated, but I think moments like these cause us to rethink LIFE. Living death can be perceived as a misery or a blessing.

Thanks for the post!

I had heard that terrorist Mousouii's sentance was life in solitary confinement three stories below ground with a black-and-white television that only picked up PBS. Now that is punishment.

I don't see how inmates in Supermax prisons survive. I think the death penalty would actually be more humane.

We are created as social beings, just as God is communal in his very being existing as Father, Son, and Spirit. We are not meant to live in isolation. Our relationship with Christ is communal as we live in the community of the Redeemed.

I suppose Mousouii's sentance could have been worse. His one channel could have been Oxygen instead of PBS.

Sounds like "withdrawing" fellowship might just work.

peter kreeft said this,
“Solitude, the thing which ancient sages longed for as the greatest gift, is the very thing we give to our most desperate criminals as the greatest punishment we can imagine.”

I say this, "of course, five years is a very long time."

and "withdrawing fellowship", what's that? it must not be in the Bible because all the Bible believing churches I know about don't practice it.

Preacherman,
Such powerful wisdom from an inmate!
We too can be isolated and feel like solitary confindement without even going to prison. How many Christians feel this way daily without anyone ever knowing.

It says two very different things to me.

On the one hand, it speaks to the feared solitude, loneliness, and emptiness of death. Compare that with the vision of Heaven given to us by Jesus: "You will be with me in Paradise".

But on the other hand, he empathizes with the trials of Jesus, abandoned by Peter, alone on the cross, bearing the penalty for the sins of everyone else, even crying out to God, "Lema sabachthani?"

Prophet,
It has gotten better for him.
I know.
He is a committed Christian who is preaching the gospel in Mexico.

Josh,
Thank you for stopping by my blog. Love for you to add to any discussion anytime. Great thoughts.

Wade,
You are such a comedian.
LOL
Maybe they should put on Oxygen network for him after what he has done. :-)
Great thoughts and thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Anonymous,
I don't think withdrawing fellowship is a good thing. Isolation isn't what the Christian life is about. We should help our brothers and sisters when they need.

Brian,
Great thoughts.
Thanks for the wonderful quote by Peter Kreeft.
It is very truthful and powerful.

David,
Thanks for sharing.
Yes I believe many Christain can feel this way without other knowing. How sad. We must be aware of others around us and do what we can to make everyone know that God thinks they are special and give them the strength that they need. Look for every opportunity.

Maria in the UK,
Uk. Wow. Where in the Uk?
