Does It Matter?

If you, as a Christian, choose to associate yourself with a political party; which one is it? Why did you choose to associate yourself with it? What characteristics or values does your political party exhibit which attracted you to that party? Are they charactistics of Christ or Christianity? Does it matter? Why or why not?

What do you think?

Excellent question for thought!!

I recently decided to become "independent" but not for reasons pertaining to my faith. However, I have often thought what implications that might have with my faith but I'm still contemplating it.

I agree with George Washington as discouraged against forming political parties in his Farewell Address to the country. Mainly, because factions risk pushing the will of the party rather than the well being of those they are to represent.

I look forward to seeing what others have to say about this as well.

I'm a registered Democrat. I registered as a Dem back in 1976 when I turned 18 partly out of the backlash of the Nixon / Watergate scandel and partly out of the old Southern Dixie-crat heritage.

I never vote a party line and most years I vote more GOP than Dem but for the most part, it depends on the issues and the candidate.

Politics have very little effect on my walk with Christ but my walk with Christ affects my walk with the Lord.

For several years I was a card-carrying member of the Libertarian Party. Then, while in Brazil, they dumped me and the other 80 or so overseas members from the roster. No appeal process or offer of membership at a higher rate to mail things overseas. They just dropped us.

I'm now trying to re-align my core outlook with the reality that Jesus is Lord now over the nations. Some of the application of that is essentially libertarian because it seems more just, but that isn't the ideology that compels me now.

Neither of the two major political parties are a great fit for a Christian. Even if there was one out there, supporting it does not have an impact because its candidates would not have a chance in getting elected.

In Washington State, we don't have to register as one party or another (I don't think so, anyway), but my wife and I always vote Republican. The Democratic party stands for too many anti-Biblical causes (just compare the two parties' platforms, on their respective websites), and I have not seen a single candidate from that lot that I would feel comfortable having in office.

The Republicans are no slam-dunk either, but they're the best we have, at the moment.

There are some who believe that Christians should not get involved in politics at all (and I respect that), but since we have to live by the laws of the land, I want to do what I can to help keep those laws friendly to a Biblical worldview.

One recent law that affects all landlords in Washington State states that a landlord cannot refuse to rent to a homosexual couple. But for those who believe (as the Bible states) that the practice is a sin, they may have strong objections.

We have gotten to the point where an atheistic but vocal minority is dictating policy for the rest of us.

OK, I'm off my soapbox now. :)

Kinney,
I first want to declare that I am going to be candid.

I have not simply desired to be a Republican. I am not a supporter of the Democrats because of the liberal ease of ill will toward God and those who desire to be true to what God desires.

Abortion and homosexuality are not in agreement with God's desire for the Human Family. These are two reasons I would find my self in conflict with if I were to support the Democratic party.

I vote for conservatism. Out of the final candidates to vote for, I voted republican. He was not my first choice. The republican party was as close to the values I hold dear the most. And that is..."One nation under God, with liberty and justice for all".

The other platforms were either unrealistic or wanted to take God and liberty away from this country by more government control. Something I would never vote for.

In 1969 I was fired from my job with the State of North Carolina because I, a registered Democrat, refused to confirm to my boss that I would vote for Democrat candidates. I soon registered as a Republican.

Just as the Democrats have slowly tilted left since John Kennedy, Republicans have done so since Regan's last term. With the exception of the hot button issues of abortion and homosexual marriage it is difficult to tell the difference in the two major parties.

Both parties grow bigger and more intrusive government, are spending more and more of our money on less meaningful things, and are more interested in their reelections than the country.

No 3rd party has interested me, each has been led by idiots.
I vote for the most conservative candidates and hold my nose with one hand and my wallet with the other.

I was a Republican for almost 30 years.. I am now an Independent (with a capital 'I').. the GOP alienated many of us with their liberal taxcut and spend policies.. the Dems are even worse.

PM; I believe you know which party I vote for, I will simply say I vote for the people who stand for the poor and downtrodden in the world. The party which does not place the value of money over the welfare of people.
Bob, being independent does not mean you belong to any political party, It simply means you remain free to choose a candidate from either party. If there is a candidate elected on the independent ticket it simply means they remain free to vote either republican or democratic, there is no independent party. how many independent bills have you seen come to a vote?

In choosing for whom to vote and with whom to align myself politically, I attempt to discern whether a candidate or party understands that the role of government is to protect innocent people by punishing those who would abuse or harm them (Romans 13:1-7).

One key way of doing so is to determine a candidate's and a party's position on abortion. If a candidate will not even TRY to protect innocent children, I realize that he or she does not have a basic understanding of government's purpose. He or she may succeed or fail in meeting the goal of protecting the lives of pre-born children, but if a candidate will not even try (or worse, will work to protect the abortionists), he or she will not receive my vote.

After passing that test, I want candidates to understand the definition of marriage as a legal bond between a man and a woman, and be willing to stand up to pressure to change the definition.

Then, I want candidates to understand that they must protect the poor from those who would abuse them through unregulated monopolies, unfair wages, racial discrimination, or any other unjust or abusive policy.

Candidates who are characterized by such qualities tend to have the wisdom and political courage to fill the role of leaders.

I don't align myself with any political party ... mostly because I don't believe that Jesus would. The closest thing there were to political parties in Israel of century one were Pharisees, Sadducees and Zealots - and while He agreed with the Pharisees that the Sadducees were wrong about resurrection, He took the Pharisees to task on pretty much every other religio-political issue they had in their party platform. He had a Zealot among his twelve closest and chosen, but never encouraged insurrection.

Wonderful discussion. I am an independant. I think it is so important for every American to vote and make their voice known. I wonder sometimes if we confuse our voice or desire with God's. I often wonder if Jesus would be an independant. I think he would look at the heart of the person. I totally understand some of you not sharing your political views or wanting to discuss politics. I do appreciate everyone's views and thoughts on this subject. I do hope and pray that the church in the 21st century will be more and more concerned with social isses. I pray that every believer in every church will have a passion to help feed the hungry, help the downcast, homeless, addicted, and those needing various needs. May God lay it on all of our hearts. May we be known as a people who care, accept and show mercy, grace to all those in need.

Again, thank you so much to everyone for adding your thoughts to this discussion.

I've only voted once for a major party (Australian Labor Party). Every other election I've voted for the Greens, and put Labor as my second preference. One of the main reasons I normally vote for the Greens is that I think they are the only party that takes seriously our comission to look after God's creation. I don't vote for them because I think they'll get into government. I vote for them because I believe they can get the government worried, and that they will force the government to become more like them.

I want to thank you Christop for your comments and sharing with us.

I also want to think everyone for their thoughts on this subject. I don't know how many of you watched the national pray service but I was encouraged by the text that was read: Isaiah 58:6-12, "Is this the kind of fasting I have chosen:to loose the cords of the yoke, and to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is not to share your food with the hungry andd to provide for the poor wonderer with shelter - when you see the naked to cloth him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? Then you r light will break forth like the dawn, and you healing will qickly appear; then your righteousness go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear gard. Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk and if yo spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and saften to the needs of the oppressed then your light will rise in the darkness and your night will become like the nnon day. The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched-land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden and like a spring whose waters never fail. Your people will rebild the ancient rins and will raise up the age-old foundations."
NIV.

Thank you so much every one for your comments.

It's important to me that i not affiliate with a political party for basically reasons already stated here. Neither of the two major American political parties do well at representing Christian ideas and even if they did that's not the point: Christ already is King and i already am a member of His Kingdom.
