Work As Working For God????

One of my favorite movies is Office Space. It deals with the idea about people enjoying the jobs that they have been assigned to in life whether it be a computer tech, waitress, construction. Can we truely find satisfaction in the jobs that we do from day to day? I know in scripture it tells us as believers to work as working for God. I often wonder how many Christians take that view of work with them in what ever position they find themselves in life. The questions I want us to ponder in this post are: Can we truely find satifsfaction in the jobs that we have in life? How do you find satisfaction in your job? How can we work as working for God whether we are in construction, education, computer techs, waitressing, or even ministry? What happens when to our lives and faith as believers when we have the mind set as working not for men or us but for Almighty God? Does it really change us? Does it influence the world when we have that kind of view of work?

What do you think?
Share your thoughts.

(Again if any churches in the Hill Country would like for me to guest speak on a weekend I would be more than happy). I hope everyone had a great holiday. Never forget God's goodness and blessings he gives you daily!

Maybe it begins when we realize that their is no delineation between the secular and the sacred.. the plumber and the preacher both have sacred callings.

Best wishes in this new year Kinney!

This is such an important concept. We must embrace our calling to be salt and light wherever we are, and whatever we do for a living.

One of the American dreams is to retire. Early retirement is a bonus. People want to sit on an island somewhere sipping a beverage.

We should find joy in our work. And find a ministry in our work as well.

Bloom where you are planted. Take your job and love it.

Kinney,
It is funny that Kansas Bob mentioned "the plumber". That is my occupation.

My job becomes a vehicle for God's work when I go into a plumbing nightmare with understanding and effort to clean up the mess and fix the problem. People are usually distressed. The situation and the unexpected cost of cleaning up and fixing the problem can be a great burden. So, if there is something else I can do without spending too much time on, I will usually ask and perform the task without charge.

I look forward to blogging with you in the year 2009.
Jim

Good questions, Preach; and good comments from everyone. I'm in a fortunate position in this regard because I am in a profession that I love - which is not to say that I always love it, but it is satisfying most of the time. I like Kansas Bob and jeleasure's takes on it: if you do something for somebody else in the course of your work (and who doesn't?) it is a way to glorify God.

I have two blogging friends who were dismissed from their preaching positions about three years ago. One sells insurance. The other sells cars. But I know their hearts, and I'm confident that their ministries continue ... probably in places where they can reach more folks with the love of Christ than they could while sequestered in a church building.

Good post Kinney and some good comments as well. Prior to entering the ministry, I was in law enforcement. I my particular police dept., cynicism was more than popular. Most employees were not believers. A Lt. I worked for made it particularly hard on those who professed faith. And at some hard times, Colossians 3:23 became the conversation among the few believers. I struggled with it at the time. The supervisor was extremely hard to get along with. And yet I'd been called to focus on working as if working for God. We got through the challenges by encouraging one another and praying tons. Even though others (unbelievers) were just as frustrated as we were, they didn't have the same outlook. For us, it made a huge difference.

I am fortunate to work at a place I love. I love the people and I love my job and I wouldn't trade it. I work for my church, Highland Oaks Church of Christ. Working at a church is not for everyone. Some are not able to handling knowing things you would rather not know. What I love about our church and our staff is the authentic community we have with each other. We are all truly working and looking to see where God is and join Him in His work. We are real with each about our work here and what we are trying to accomplish through Him.

For me, I choose to always try and find the positive in whatever is going on. And I think that's the key in every job. No job is perfect, but if we look for what is good, it's a whole lot easier to work as we're working for God. Blessings to you!

I think its helpful to think of our jobs as a ministry. If its working with people then your ministry will be the people you serve.

If its working with "things" if you will, your ministry will be ministering mainly to your co-workers.

The creation of life is such a marvelous gift from God...It is said that "God's gift to us is life; what we do with that life is our gift to God"...So many of us fail to unwrap this wonderful package that God placed inside each of us...Everyone is unique...Each of us must experience many situations as we ever so slowly begin to realize the talents that God placed inside each of us...As I go through my day, I find it difficult not to see the wonder of God all around me...The sights, the sounds, the people; all are quite amazing...I think that it might be as simple as being a "giver" more than a "taker"...God expects us to watch over each other; even on the job...Always leave a quiet, anonymous footprint behind...Everyone likes good...Let's multiply it everywhere we go in all that we do...It creates faith and hope.

good questions, preacherman. i think this kind of view definitely makes a difference.

consider what a worshipful approach to work does for our sense of gratitude. and then gratitude begets less complaining, which begets patience, which begets slower-to-speak responses to problem co-workers and warmer responses to a spouse who asks, "how was work today?" which changes intimacy in marriage that may lead to..., well, you get the point.

and that's just one direction of the ripple effect. imagine the others.

keeping our eyes upon Jesus as we journey through this place shifts our motivations from secular to spiritual and it does all kinds of crazy unexplainable exciting things - but it's hard and we can't do it alone and most often it is a sink, float, and walk on water type of journey
