Persecution

Have you experienced persecution from those who claim to be "Christians" or those of the "World" or "Neither"?

From fellow Christians? Yes. And yes. And on any number of other occasions that I haven't blogged about.

Oh, not first- through third-century seizure-and-torturous-execution persecution, no. Just the unsociable type. The type that says you're-wrong-about-that-and-you-must-repent-or-you-are-not-my-brother-anymore.

But here's the kicker. Have I ever been persecuted by those of the world?

Never. Not once. Have always, without exception (to the very best of my recollection) been treated with respect for my beliefs by those who don't share them.

I agree with Keith. I have experienced the social rejection part of persecution. As I have become more expressive of my Spirit-filled side, I have had much criticism. I have been called a liar when I have shared my testimony of what I have seen the Spirit do. I have been told that me raising my hands during worship is "distracting" and that I "needed to stop." Oh well, I am here to please Jesus, not them.

My question is: If we aren't being criticized or persecuted, is that indicative of a problem with our faith? Scritpure says we WILL be persecuted if we follow Jesus. If we aren't being persecuted, should we be? Should we be worried if we aren't being persecuted?

My brother has been quoted as saying,"If someone isn't hacked off at you, you are irrelevant." There might be some truth to that. Persecution may be an indication of our relevancy.

Have we become such an approval seeking fellowship that we are afraid to do God's will? We have to face the possibility of rejection and persecution to follow Jesus. We have to be relevant and bold enough to be persecuted and rejected.

Both. Sometimes I deal with it easily. Sometimes it's hard. It depends on circumstances, the people involved, and other factors.

I guess it depends on what you mean by persecution. I think the kind of persecution that Jesus and the apostles went through is rare in our setting here, today.

I don't know. I hesitate to call the disagreements, divisions and problems between Christians persecution. It certainly is not pleasant. But is it really persecution for the cause of Christ? I tend to think generally, not. Because those who really move forward with the gospel are usually respected, even if there is disagreement.

Good question.

From church people? Yes.

From the world? Yes, but not as much.
