Forgiveness

Forgiveness. What does it mean to forgive? How does it make one feel when forgiveness is offered? Why is it hard for some to give, recieve and accept forgiveness? How does forgiveness affect the body, mind, soul? How does forgiveness affect us as humans? How have you personally been affected by giving, recieving and accepting forgivess? Do you think forgiveness is an important part of life? Are Christians known as a people of forgiveness? Should Christians be known for being a forgiving people? Why or why not?

What do you think?

I think that forgiveness is both an act and a process. Minor offences can be forgiven in a moment but deeper ones often happen over an extended period of time.

Very well said, KB!

We ought to...but it's tough to do...especially for (to) our enemies.

Kinney; I have a problem with the concept that forgiveness is offered.

Forgiveness is the will and act of the one who forgives the transgression against him by another.
Just like Jesus who forgave us our trespasses against Him, and that wasn't an offering either but a finished work on Calvary.
If it would be an offering, then we could reject it, but if it is a finished act of forgiveness then it doesn't matter whether we believe, receive, accept, reject or whatever, since it is the will and act of the one who forgives.

(eg.) If you owe me 10 million Dollars and have no way to repay me and I forgave you all of your debt against me, then it doesn't matter what you believe, think, accept, reject or feel, the fact is that you owe me nothing anymore because I forgave your debt.

Forgiveness is something we talk about a lot as Christians. In practice it's understandable if we find it hard or find ways to wrap hatred and resentment up as something else. A while back I blogged about 'admonition and forgiveness', (http://radref.blogspot.com/2010/02/admonition-and-forgiveness.html). Forgiveness is something we have to get right - individually and corporately. The alternative is truly appalling.
