The Council of Nicea & the Bible

The council of Nicea has made many question the inspiration and fullness of scripture. Did the council throw out gospels, letters and books in the Bible that may have shown Jesus to be less divine? More human? Did there need to be a council to determine what was inspired and not inspired? Could have culture, prejudices, teachings, opinions determined what the council considered inspired? What if the council threw out gospels, letters, books that could have changed Christianity as we know it today? Does it seem right that there even had been a council? Was God & the Holy Spirit at work in what we now have as the Bible?

Good questions. I think God is powerful enough to get His message across through the ages to spite what man does or doesn't do. The Father draws all men to Himself so He has kind of taken that responsibility on. We all know He wins in the end :) I hope I am not being to naive!

The ecumenical councils were obviously modeled after the council at Jerusalem (Act 15) that appears to be modeled after the Jewish councils. Because the New Testament Church held a council, there's a precedent set for having them in later times. We can argue over whether or not the councils were always profitable, but much of our doctrine, the acceptance of our canon, and our recognition of certain heresies stem from decisions made by the participants. And it makes sense that churches that refused to fellowship with each other would recognize different councils as being official.

The council most likely througj out all references to Jesus humanity. It is sad. Also influences of Christian women, writers, leaders. Why I dont and never will take the Bible serious.

I suppose it comes down to how strongly you feel about the Trinity. As I understand it, the council really was trying to resolve a difference in the clergy teachings about the humanity of Christ.

I'm with the other commenters, though. God's Holy Spirit is active in the world, in choosing the canon, in guiding the church, and in guiding me when I study if I am quiet enough and humble enough to listen to the still small voice.

Mostly, I miss it. I gotta be honest. But sometimes, there it is. Sometimes I share with a select few what I'm thinking I might hear from God, sometimes I write a poem or two. And, I'm sure, sometimes I'm wrong. God forgive me for those times.

It is either all true;
Or it is all a lie!
I choose to believe it is truth!

I wrote a carefully researched and referenced book on the Council of Nicea.

It is amazing how the myth has spread that the council threw out books of the Bible. The Council of Nicea never addressed the canon, but the average person has no idea how to verify that. I've taken the time to catalog the only sources we have for what took place at Nicea. All of those are available on the internet, thanks to the Christian Classics Ethereal Library. You can click my name to see the list of sources.
