Racism & The Church

Racism. It is a hot topic for media, politics, authors, and activists today. Yet I believe it is a topic and subject that we cannot and should not ignore.
The Church and Christians can't just sweep it under the rug and act like it isn't a problem. I have seen progress but we have much to learn and deal with when it comes to judging other based on the color of skin.
You may be asking why deal with this topic? Why, bring this up? I have seen and heard first hand of racism in Churches today.
A couple of months ago a minister applied to a church in the south. The church and the minister made inquiries into each other and the topic of race, segregation or lack of fellowship with what the church called "black congregations" was addressed. The church made further inquires and found that minister had facebook friends who were black and told the minister they were offended and it wouldn't work out.
Another friend shared with me that a congregation in town would not fellowship with the hispanic congregations.
So, why would people who claim to love God; hate or judge a group of people that God created, based on the color of their skin? Has The Church ignored racism? If so, why? Have you seen racism in The Church and Christians? What can The Church do to tear down the walls of self-imposed segregation? What is your church doing to foster an enviornment of unity?

What do you think?

Funny that you should write about racism right now. A few days ago, I stumbled upon a blogger talking about CofC parents seeing CofC college brochures featuring black men interacting with white women. When the blogger replied to a comment I'd made, he stated rather bluntly that this bothered him, and that he was bothered that it didn't bother other CofC members. Although I've not been completely sheltered from racism, and I was aware that there was still a problem among CofC congregations, I'm still a bit shocked.

It's not as bad as it once was, but it's something worth overcoming.

I do think the church has ignored racism. We need to keep working to tear down the walls that divide and focus on unity.

It is sad that we as Christian leaders do sweep the topic under the rug. Maybe we should preach and teach more on loving others despite differences. You have challenged me Preaherman to teach this Sunday on this very topic. Thanks.

It isn't just CofC...I am a member of the Methodist Church and have seen the same attitude toward inter-racial couples and families.

How awful that racism would still exist within the Church today, considering God has made it quite clear that He wants unity within the Body. May we all open our hearts more and drop the prejudices that blind us from pursuing our full identities in Christ and bringing God glory. May we remember the greatest commandment of all: to love.

Prejudices based upon race, nationality, last-names or physical location, not to mention social prejudices, have to be addressed in not only churches but in faith communities everywhere. Including on line. Jesus ministered to and spent much of His time with the very people that would not be welcome in many churches or faith groups today. Why is it so hard to minister to someone other than ourselves? Good post and while short it was thought provoking...

Terry,
Thanks brother for posting and adding to the discussion. Good to here from you. I agree it was probably worse in the 50's and 60's and that it is definately worth overcoming.

Anonymous,
I agree that it isn't just the CofC but other denominations as well. It something that the church as whole must work on to overcome.

Becky,
I couldnt' agree more. We have ignored and need to do whatever it takes to destroy all forms of hatred and spirit of racism.

Danny,
Thanks for your comments. I think preaching and teaching on this topic is a great idea. Also services that focus and honor different ethnic groups and cultures is great too. Also inviting ministers of different races to speak at your church would be a great way to help.

I agree that inviting speakers with different backgrounds (racial, cultural, regional, whatever) would be a great idea. From what I've seen, a lot of prejudice is reinforced by the (usually mistaken) belief that all such-and-such people are heathens, liberals, sell-outs, etc. Hearing people of other races preach the same messages might help dispell that myth.

Jessica,
Thanks. You are right that love is what is important, central, the most important of the message of Jesus. If we have not love everything we do is pointless, vain. 1 Cor 13 and 1 John. It is sad and shocking and something that we must stress within churches and that is to love. Love differences. Love uniqueness. Love our neighbors even the ones in other neighborhoods. Love our neighbors in the slums and ghettos. I think you get to the heart of it. Love is what it is all about. Thanks for your thoughts and adding to the discussion. I apprecaite it

Mystic mom,
Thanks for your thoughts. I agree, "Everywhere." We must address it and do the things that bring about unity and love. It is my hope that it will be addressed and worked on more in faith communities everywhere. I apprecaite your thoughts and am glad you found it thought provoking. God bless.
