Does Prayer Change Anything.

Does prayer change anything. Circumstances. If so, what does it change. Are their examples of prayers changing circumstances. What where they and how. How have you seen prayer change things whether good or bad. Give examples.

What do you think.

Well said Karen. For my part, I wonder if the answer does not depend on the nature of God's omniscience and the reality of whether we truly have free will.

While I must admit to hate the idea of determinism, it seems difficult to reconcile an omniscient being with a world that has a definite outcome he is unaware of. Unless you engage in some serious theological side stepping, if you assume God knows everything then you must also assume that he knows what the end result is, leading to the conclusion that prayer can't really change anything. An all knowing God would see down the long chain of events from the moment he first created the world, and at that point he would already know how everything was going to play out.

On a separate note, it does not seem that an official prayer would ever be necessary, because an omniscient God already intimately knows your thoughts and desires and needs, without you having to mentally verbalize them in the form of a prayer. He would be able to answer your prayer without you ever needing to pray it.

However, it is possible that answering an unvoiced prayer might be considered a violation of the free will of the individual. Such a case might be if God gave you the strength to pull through a situation without you asking for it. Along the same line, if you were to pray for your mother’s emotional well-being without her knowledge, you would be asking God to intervene in her life. If God values free will then he must in this case hold back from answering your prayer, as it might violate the free will of your mother.

Both these two dilemmas can be resolved if you assume that since God is omniscient he would already know whether you would accept his help, and would thus be able to answer your prayer for your mother and your own unvoiced prayer without violating either of your free wills.

Unfortunately, this whole chain rather invalidates the idea of free will altogether. I feel forced to conclude that free will, omniscience, and the ability of prayer to change reality are three concepts which cannot coexist. Insofar as God’s active intervention is concerned it seems that prayer can have no tangible results.

However, leaving God and his contributions out of the equation, I think another answer can be reached on the human level. The mere act of praying is an undoubted comfort to the individual, and to know you have been prayed for must also have effects. It appears I have rambled on for a long while simply to come to Karen’s much neater conclusion: "Prayer may not change circumstances, but it changes the one who prays."
